came across this particular article on the ST today, you people might want to check it out.

to sum it up:

1) young riders - higher chances of dying in an accident (as compared to the older age group)

2) pillions - 3x the chance of dying in an accident as compared to the rider

3) younger pillions - even higher chance of dying (because apparently young riders generally get into an accident at a higher speed (F=ma?))

TP is considering to not allow riders to pillion until they have 1 yr of road experience.

I read the article.

They are actually "all for the idea", but there's a low chance of implementation. So no worries there.

I'm curious.. The effectiveness of the policy aside, whats holding them back on implementation? Its not like there is a coherent voice advocating pplater's rights to pillion. And yeah, it sounds a little weird as if I'm talking about my nick. I also dun understand about possible controls on box. Its not like there is major stability issue right? I can't imagine they tell us what box we can put etc. Storage space very important to me.. Anyone can enlighten?

P-plate should be an attitude to safety and riding. There's always more to learn.

1 thing that's holding them back is that if the case arises for Riders to not have any pillion, it'll cause up a storm because then, newly pass drivers will not be allowed to have passengers in their Cars as well.

So this will be a problem, the government at the end of the day, needs to be fair.

Why alwys must compare with car? Car having a passenger in d passenger seat and bikers having a pillion is 2 different thing.

Think out of the box, mate. If accidents do occurred, who knows no life is to be spared.

IMO, i doubt implementing this would be a good idea, albeit the good intentions..

i forsee lots of frustration, upheaves & unhappiness (heehs, forcasting mcm paham)..

law of no box on bikes? impractical..it's self-explained why the impracticalness..

law of no pillioning during 1st yr? how if there's an emergency & the only one who can ride/drive in a particular situation that need transportation is a new passer?

in the end, it's all up to the rider/driver to do their best in the name of safety..not only cars or bikes..lorries, trailers, vans, etc..cuz no matter what anyone does, accidents still do happen..the only best thing we can do is to lessen the damage..

further more, if pple dun get experience for their 1st yr of pillioning, how does one think they can manage in their 2nd yr? obviously can, but not for everyone..esp of those who intend to take up 2a/2 license..handling a higher capability bike and pillioning at the same time for the first time, i doubt is easy as it looks..

Posted

well if its implemented. 1 way for pillioning is just to not to put the P-Plate so that they wont be easily noticed but pray hard that they dont get stop by officials lor... if not 2 time troubles... Never put P-Plate And Pillioning...

well.. i think its a fair enuf law.. look around.. no offence but i see alot of

p-platers with pillions that ride with no regards for their own lives..

seriously, I've seen one too many whereby, p-plate riders speeding off,

brushing other vehicles closely.. the sad part is the pillion's life (most prolly

their gf) at the back is heavily compromised for their reckless actions..

im sure we'd think the other way if our own relatives n frens met with an

accident in the account of recklessness of a inexperienced rider. and we've

heard so many stories like this.

I think it is a matter of timing. Considering that just a few weeks ago, we have that pretty high profile case of the two rear passengers in a car dying in an accident. This was following another accident that had two deaths. Both drivers were P-Platers, if I recall correctly.

While I agree that there is a difference between car passengers and motorcycle pillions, I believe that this difference is hard to put down into a law without being viewed as discrimination.

Once that idea that the law is biased takes hold, other issues like socio-economic status of motorcycle riders versus car drivers would be dragged into the discussion.

I believe that the Government is aware that motorcycles allow a large number of Singaporeans and foreigners to get to work, and play a part in our economic landscape. They are also aware of the impact dispatch and delivery riders have on our economy and lifestyle.

Having said that, I would not be at all surprised if a ban on P-Platers having pillion riders was introduced, as a justification to save more lives. No one can really argue against that line. Alternatively, they might enforce more lessons for riding with pillions.
