No choice, life is unfair.

P-plate lasts just one year. It'll be over soon. Just think when you got your class 2B but wanted to ride a 600cc bike. It was unbearable then, but you don't make a big deal out of it now, do you?

Parking without poles is easy if you understand how the poles correspond to the positions of the car.

Bro, this is one matter everyone have to take into consideration before borrowing from friends/relatives.

What if they never get comprehensive insurance?

Even so, if the accident is quite serious and involves the engine or car structure, most likely the car will be written off.

If the car is worth $100k, the insurance companies won't pay you $100k or a brand new car. (unless the car is less than a year old)

They will pay you much lower than the market rate, you will suffer a great loss. Ever heard of people still paying installments after their car/bike was stolen/written off?

It's not just a matter of money.

It will spoil the relationship with your friends/relatives.

Even if it's a slight dent/bump/scratch, What about the downtime when the car is in the workshop?

They might need it for their day-to-day jobs.

Courtesy cars have a limited coverage length IIRC.

Do your homework and search for those which rent to new drivers.

Save the hassle.

Like i said before, it's only a year. What is the rush?

We bikers have to wait much longer and go through all the bookings/practicals/tests again to get our Class 2.

Cheers.

Hi all,

I wonder y this happens. Imagine u juz passed n hence, u r a p-plate driver, ur family doesnt own a car, and u cant really afford it as yet. So, the solutions are borrow or rent. Socially, friends n relatives will get skeptical in letting u drive their car becoz u r new. Hence, they will always refrain from lending u. Car Rental agents, worse, "P-plate holders not allowed to rent", as most of them says.

I know that these new drivers had worked extremely hard for their freaking small text that read, "Class 3 Motor Cars = ), to be written on the back of their photocard licence. Some take so many repeated test juz to get it done. And when they found out, they couldnt rent a car or borrow from someone.

I am not saying all friends n relatives are stingy (believe me, some even buy cars for the new drivers), but some really are. Those new drivers with family cars are excluded from this issue ok.

So the final solutions will be:

1) Save enough money to finance for a car

2) Wait for you 1-year probation period to end.

As you can see, both these 2 solutions linked. To save enough money, u need time. By the time it comes, your 1-year period ends.

So after 1-year without any driving experience, do you think most of them will have that full skill and confidence they've built so well more than a year ago?

I DONT THINK SO.most will get rusty and tend to get nervous on the road.

This might be a factor leading to high accident rates in SG.

I strongly feel new-drivers should be given the chance to expose themselves.

By giving us a pass in the driving test, it shows Traffic Police has given them the trust to drive on the road, why cant the public trust them too?

I welcome ur ideas. Be it harsh or gentle, lets discuss this issue. Thank you.

The driving centres all offer refresher courses. If the driver really wants to remain "well oiled", they can always go for the refresher courses.

As for probation plate drivers... I guess the tune sung will be slightly different if the one accident the biker has is to be hit with a P plate driver.

Rebuilding my dreams. But first, the gears

1) WP RS Taichi riding jacket

2) WP riding pants

3) Titanium riding gloves

4) Garmine Nuvi 550 GPS (US$259)

5) WP Komine riding boots

6) Arai Helmet

7) The BIKE of course! :cheeky:

Oh yah, refresher courses. :thumb:

Actually even private driving instructors offer that, because my mum took refresher courses from my previous instructor. :D

Wats the point of waiting until your probation is over before driving?

Its not like, the confidence and experience to drive well will come naturally and automatically after one year without driving.

Recently, my wife faced such a conundrum.

She passed her Class 3 back in Dec last year. But, despite my strong urgings, never made the effort to practice and experience driving out.

Not to mention that certain members of the family were less inclined to let her do so with the family cars, despite being the same ones vocally urging her to quickly pass her licence and bugging her to drive (typical NATO attitude).

So this Hari Raya, I decided to tip the balance a bit, being the family outcast and rebel that I am. I decided to quickly get a rental car for her to drive.

I told her, I can't drive but I've ridden on the road for nearly 10 years with no breaks in between. So I know road rules and conditions well enough to be able to guide her in what to watch out for.

Despite same family members strongly objecting to her driving (what hypocrites), I forced tge issue through and managed to convince her to go for it.

Simply to say, things went very well. I had a fren's GPS module on my PDA for navigation and my road experince to guide her. All she had to do was focus and wat needed to be done.

Thankfully, all went well, she is more experienced and more confident after 2 days straight of driving and willing to do more driving now. I might even get more rental car times on weekends for our outings.

Ultimately, its whether you are confident of your own capabilities, not what other ppl say.

And that experience and skills comes from doing it, not thinking about it.

Cheaper insurance.

Lower excess and risk assessment.

Not in the "high-risk" group as determined by the insurance/rental companies.

Even if the person haven't been driving for 30 years, his insurance will still be much cheaper than the fresh P-plater.

I just pass my class 3 today :D

To say the fact, I really suck at driving... I can't even park the car well with the poles.. not to mention without poles..

And i don't dare to go over 50km/hr on the road with a car..

Well.. so anyone got any P-plate welcoming car rental co. to introduce to me?

Nothing against you , LL.

In fact, alot of the new drivers are just like you.

To the threadstarter,

this is why i said our Class 3 test is not comprehensive enough and too easy. :D

Quite a tough one. But anyway, even a non p-plater who didnt drive for a year might or might not be able to drive well. Same goes for the p-plater coz if he/she just passed and started driving immediately, then he/she might be trying to do what is taught and applying it. But there is a twist to it; He/she managed to scrap thru the tp test and in real life situation, circumstances he/she might not be able to handle the pressure. So to sum it all up, making this comparison is subjective.......

what are the chances of a p-plater not touching the steering wheel for a whole year?

many already have cars waiting for them before they passed, or they buy one soon after they passed. Alot families have more than 2 or 3 cars.

of course there is still the minority.

so you can safely say that most of the times a non p-plater have more driving experience than someone who just passed.

Statically true, unless you have a better and easy way to gauge.

When the person says: He has booked a car, most likely that dude only pays the agreement deposit. So what are the chances of a dude taking his practical and had "booked" his ride at a average income level without any support?

Anyway i feel the thread in mcf has alot of loopholes, which could not be use as an example. The person can test drive without license? or without test drive he juz buy?

To the threadstarter,

this is why i said our Class 3 test is not comprehensive enough and too easy. :D

And experienced drivers adapt to different vehicles much faster than P platers which is a plus point in parking and handling etc :thumb:

ya i agree, maybe not a good example.

don't take things at face value.

however i do have friends who have car waiting for them even before they passed. dad brought him and booked a Z4 while waiting for TP test.

anyway i just saw a P-plated GTR on the road.

actually quite alot of people buy cars without test-drive.

my dad is one such person, so are his friends.

Posted

well normally dads don't need to test drive  because word of mouth is good enough to convince them. Furthermore their adaptability to diff cars is so good given their driving experience(most likely). :thumb:
