Should motorcycles keep clear of right lanes?

if there is no road hogger, there will be no tailgating.

tailgating happens when there is a roadhog.

don care legal speed as long as the bike/car behind is faster than u,

u have to give way on lane 1. school nvr teach u can overtake from the left but most of the time u are left with no choice.

Its called lane discipline. Taught in driving schools and instructors around Singapore, through the years. Keep LEFT if you're NOT overtaking. Somehow the lesson seems lost on road users nowdays.

I think its true what yr driving instructor said. No use if you had the right of way when you get killed.

Riding defensively, is the skill of riding so as to position yourself in the best possible manner to maximise visibility and awareness of your vehicle by other road users as well as maintaining your own buffer road space from the vehicle in front and all around.

AND I absolutely HATE it when some **** driver overtakes me from behind and edges in dangerously to claim my following distance space. JUST to get ahead of me. I usually respond by lane splitting going further ahead and filtering in a few cars ahead just to spite him. :p Its an ego thing la but I don't think its a particularly dangerous practise.

I would think it works cos once the cars drop out between me and him he still ends up behind but doesnt pull the same stunt anymore.

that's what happens to me.. i keep a safe following distance.. and a car just cuts in front of me.. i want to do the same thing as you did.. but i dun feel confident (you can say i scared) to lane split.. esp when the vehicle are actually travelling quite fast.. if traffic is crawling or almost totally stop i would lane split..

Rat bike - A motorcycle not necessarily kept in pristine condition, often painted matt black. Minimal maintenance and mismatched parts often used.

Case study:

Shanghai (or was it the whole of China) have traffic regulations regarding the use of the very 1st lane. Essentially, most city highways have "minimum speed" signboards on the "overtaking" first lane. Moreover:

A minimum speed limit is in force: the minimum is 70 km/h. On overtaking lanes, however, this could be as high as 100 km/h to 110 km/h. Penalties for driving both below and in excess of the prescribed speed limits are in force.

~source: wikipedia

I am surprised and utterly disturbed that our road authorities can implement "efficient" vehicle through-ways such as bus lanes and even police traffic and speeding as well, but to neglect the perpetual problem of road hogging?

At least if curriculum fails, enforce!!

Just like how we did with chewing gum!! :dot:

At what speed is considered as road hogging on our highways? I travel mostly on highways daily to work, at times I see DRIVERS driving at 60km/h ~ 70km/h on 2nd lane onwards and road is quite clear too, so who's hogging the road now? Come silly drivers, wake up your bloody ideas!

i think now it's not the issue about how fast on the 2nd lane. There is always 1st lane for u to overtake with. But if you hog lane1, no place to overtake already.

Many times when I'm in lane1 behind a car with about 1-2 car length of safety distance, there will be idiot drivers whom without fail perform their superb tailgating skills on me. Lane 2 is totally congested btw. SO WHAT DO THEY EXPECT ME TO DO? They wanna see me kiss people's backside, ram the fellow in front of me, squeeze my way into lane2, brush the car beside me or extend my wings and fly over the guy in front of me THEN THEY HAPPY IS IT?

Practical Test Checklist:

√ Sudden and late braking

√ Faulty signal lights

√ Superb use of horn

√ Assume road belongs to father

√ Never at fault no matter what happens

√ Tailgating confidence

Result: YES! You qualify to become a Singapore car driver!

Singapore's expressways should be divided into minimum three lanes, left for traffic below 90km/h, middle for traffic at 90km/h and right lane for overtaking at a maximum speed of 110km/h or emergencies.

I'd like to thank pplater, chaoz, redbeacon, ghost04,shahrul, kmax, dragonforce, speedlee, seraph, contrarian, keown, silent hunter, theforce, s-line, mxer98, chiam, dexirant and dinie for their kind sharing of experience with the younger riders. They have shared very good insights on how to STAY ALIVE on spore roads. Spore roads now and during the 80s are very different: last time CTE totally no jam, now everywhere jam, sporeans are always rushing, driving fast, and RIDERS are the most at risk. The above veterans are SPOT ON when saying no point enforcing our right of way when the vehicles behind only want to rush to their appointments on time? The above bikers have shown a great understanding of not just their own riding but also a good understanding of other vehicles on the road. I do hope the younger riders listen to these group of riders: I am very sure they belong to the older bracket of riders, with vast experience.

It is disturbing to see so many deaths on the roads and I am just doing my part to help fellow Sporeans. I really appreciate this singaporebikes forum as it is an excellent platform for the younger riders to learn from the older ones. I do agree with pplater that the irritating TPs standing at the bridges tend to cause more accidents than us riding fast. But I have to do that to show the motoring fraternity that expressway jams are indeed caused by drivers refusing to keep left even though there are no cars in front of them and they are being tailgated. Traffic police are not interested in booking these blockers, maybe because government policy is to encourage jams, so they have excuse to build more ERPs and charge higher ERPs by using traffic jams as an excuse: think about it.

I have friends who have died in bike and vehicle accidents: It is extremely sad. Most of the time it is not the riders' fault: it could be the driver being drunk, maybe his wife left him, maybe he's in a great hurry, maybe he suffer a heart attack?

pplater, thanks for your comment on the website, I do appreciate it and I think you understand where I'm coming from ya. I took a few videos of some really kayu cars and taxis really hogging the CTE and causing a slowdown of traffic, especially so now that government has lost much money in the financial markets, and guess how they would top up their coffers? Increase more COE and build more ERP gantries: Nobody can argue with them because more cars + some roadhogs = massive jams = more ERP gantries & higher ERP charges. Spore will be a more and more difficult place to live in for the middle class. Education, food costs, living costs are all going up despite the fact that crude oil, commodities prices have plummeted. All this inflation can be controlled by government, but they choose not to. I am in midst of researching on and analysing their very clever policies which will only create more wealth for the state, but make life more difficult for middle class. I do hope to receive more inputs from fellow sporeans so as to make life in Spore a better place to live in.

I do tink LTA should consider having a special lane for motorbikes...

I soo agree :D

i hate it when the cars squeeze into my following distance..as for lane discipline..its common sense that vehicles on the righter lane shud b travelling faster then the ones on the righter lanes..and 1st lanes are somehow safer on e ways, cuz most vehicles are jus going straight n not too much action of changing lanes other then going to 2nd lane or 2nd to 1st & also almost no big heavy vehicles :D

generally, to sum it up, try to follow d traffic rules, but bend them when needed, cuz we jus follow the flow of traffic & make wise judgements..
