Hi guys.. I bought my bike on July 5th 2008 from a bike shop and thus my insurance will cover me from 05/07/08 - 04/07/09. Usually bike shop will only give you 1/2 yr road tax which was what happened to me.

Last week, LTA sent me a letter to renew my road tax saying mine is going to expire on 31/1/09. Renew half year will make it until 31/7/09. But when I try to renew online, the system wouldn't let me saying my insurance does not cover the road tax date. So now how?

-Do I really have to renew my insurance 1/2 yr earlier? (preferably not, not within my plans)

-Can I request for the road tax to expire 2 weeks earlier and not renew my insurance yet?

-Can I buy 1 month insurance to extend until I can cover my road tax?

-Any other ways?

Practical Test Checklist:

√ Sudden and late braking

√ Faulty signal lights

√ Superb use of horn

√ Assume road belongs to father

√ Never at fault no matter what happens

√ Tailgating confidence

Result: YES! You qualify to become a Singapore car driver!

1) Go to talk to LTA website and select On Vehicle -> Road tax renewal... Link's here:

send in your request and wait at least 2 weeks for them to get back to you.

2) You may renew at least 1 year in advance.

3) You may choose to have your insurance and road tax expired on the same day or a day earlier whichever latter is going to expire.

the simplest way will be to call up your insurer, and extend your insurance coverage by another few weeks to the date of your insurance expiry. you will be able to align your insurance expiry and road tax expiry on the dame date then

Yup.

Encountered this before. My insurance was short of the required days to cover the road tax. Paid a few dollars to my insurer cover the shortfall. Thereafter, no worries cos the road tax & insurance will go in tandem.

few days also can, but they will probably charge u extra. So you should had covered it up to your roadtax date when you buy the insurance.

What a cunning ploy by them

so if i bought that few weeks of insurance, does it means that i cannot renew my rd tax online already? have to go over the counter to show my insurance and renew?

It depends on ur insurance company.

Some may not allow u to extend a few days or weeks.

Check with them first.

I did check with Anda (AXA) and they dun allow.

I even kpkb at their Thompson Rd office and they still dun allow.

I'm going to jump to NTUC in july.

I hope they are more flexible.

Cheers !

I just extended my insurance for 3 weeks and renewed roadtax till Jul 09.

Everything done within a day. Last week.

Insurance company is AIG. Went to Anda insurance broker at Lavender.

Did you get involved in any claims on your policy?

I extended my AXA policy for 2 different bikes, as did the buyers of my 2 bikes - none of us had any problems doing the policy extension with Anda.

I never make any claim with any company since 1995.

if you extend your insurance to the date of your road tax and did your inspection, think only a few insurers can help you do the renewal.

But most likely, people dont do their inspection until they are certain they can do the paperwork done frist. And since LTA is usually with the inspection centre. kinda more worth while to do those at the centres.

BTW, a word of caution, for new buyers, there is no 1/2 month or 6 months insurances, you have to be their customer for a year, then can negotiate for a new insurance to cover till your road tax is due.

What was the reason given to you for not extending the policy?

I just spoke to the branch manager today and she affirmed that extensions are common and they allow extensions of less than 6 months to match the road tax date.

If your policy is expiring and your renewal notice has already been sent to you, then they would ask you to renew your policy and extend your renewed policy instead (so your renewed policy matches your road tax date more than 12 months later). This would be favourable to you because you get the NCD on the renewed policy earlier.
