whats the differences between air-cooled and liquid-cooled engine?

any pros and cons between the two type of engine? (eg:- maintenance aspect, easily overheat, etc)

Flea> i've heard of Google. But by posting it in the SBF, i will gather information from the riders in SBF thru their experience in riding those type of engines. Anyway, am i right to say that in SBF, its where riders unite and share their experiences in riding or etc...

anyway thanks for the advise though ;)

if my posting is wrong or is not beneficial towards the rest of the SBF family, my apology....

will do it right in the future...

Well Redir. I'm sure you have already used google so you will already know what's the difference.

However, i will give you my understanding and opinion of the 2.

Air-Cooled

Pros

-Low Maintenance. No need to change coolant. Uses the air passing through the fins of the engine to cool it down.

Cons

-Gets pretty hot in traffic jams or any other situations you are not moving.

Liquid-Cooled

Pros

-Much Cooler engine compared to air-cooled ones.

Cons

-More maintenance than air-cooled. Need to change coolant/top up/flush every now and then or when necesary

-More prone to problems as there are more moving parts and electronics involved.

Bigger bikes are liquid cooled as the engine displacement is larger and hence, more heat is generated. Smaller bikes, most 2B bikes tend to be air cooled as their engine capacities are not very large, therefore not generating as much heat is larger cc bikes.

For me, i prefer air cooled because i am damn lazy and cheap. Example, my YBR engine oil never change 4 months, today i just found out at a very critical level because i was cleaning my air filter. I just go nearest bike shop, buy oil and change myself at my house there.

Oil-Cooled is the channelling of your own engine oil to a radiator to cool down the engine oil.

Quite low in maintenance as well.

*Cough*

It's not may fault. You didn't ask for oil cooled. So like in english comprehension, you never ask i didnt tell leh... :sian:

I got one question, if an air cooled engine motorcycle crossing water with cylinders submerged in water, can we call it a water cooled engine for a brief moment?

heard of this but dont know how true it is, maybe some could come and clarify. it was said air cooled engine are designed to run in a hotter environment and had more heat tolerance level, and will fare better than water-cooled engines in hot places as well as slow riding

heard from some mechanic says that aircooled engine block are tougher to withstand the heat while liquid cool ones are not that tough. i think simple is better, juz like the old vw beetle. no nid to headache abt water pump, thermostat,coolant.....

Add a third-kind: there is Oil-cooled as well

Essentially it is still an air-cooled engine

You are right up to here

That's not right.

Air-cooled (AC)engines are built with a looser tolerance machined parts than a liquid cooled (LC) engines which give a false impression that AC engines are tougher

LC engines are more efficient in heat management so they can afford tighter tolerance machined parts hence higher performance.

Actually, all motorcycle engines transfer the heat to the air eventually. The true water cooled engines are those marine engines that dump the heat to the water that float the boat.

I read somewhere a modern Formula 1 engine has very tight tolerance and it is technically seized at room temperature where a cold start will destroy the engine. When starting from cold it has to be hooked up to an external unit that heats and circulates the fluids until everything are warm enough before you poke the external starter to crank it.

No la bro, i where got like that. What i do is that i wake up 2-3am in the morning, ride my bike to the nearest bike shop which is less than 100m away, pour inside the oil drum then pump petrol.
