Hi, im sorry if this topic has been shared before.

Anw, i was thinking cuz i love diy'ing on my own bike as in basic servicing.

Like changing EO, spark plug & etc ...

So i came across in mind abt wat oil to lube my chain. As i not actuali prefer spray can chain lube as frm my believe, its thin & wont last long..

So wen everytime i change EO (i use transmission gear oil SAE10W40) & of coz thre will be a leftover on the bottle. & i was thinking if this leftover GO can be use as chain lube.. Because Gear oil is to lubricate the moving parts frm easily wear off parts..

What do u guys think? Any comments???

i think you can use new engine oil to lube your chain, some pple with scottoiler pour in chain lube to lube their chain.

Rat bike - A motorcycle not necessarily kept in pristine condition, often painted matt black. Minimal maintenance and mismatched parts often used.

bro,

any oil can be used to lube the chain because oil itself is a form of lubricant. It only matters that different oil is made for different purposes. its ok to use EO for chain lube but keep in mind that it does not stick well to chains and tends to fling when the bike moves. its because the oil reacts to the heat on the chain and sprockets.

as for used EO, its best that you do proper filtration first to remove any metal bits and also any foreign impurities. all these stuff will eat the rubber rings in your chain and cause premature wearing.

Alrite, thanks for the info bro :)

Gonna try it later on.. If it flings pretty bad den no choice gonna stop using it..

Hey JB. Oil used in the engine crankcase is usually 10W-40 to 20w-50 and are called ENGINE oil & used in the engine crankcase. GEAR oil on the other hand are very much higher in viscosity -the multigrade gear oil are usually 80-90W and are used in the drive shaft transmission of shaft drive bikes or cars.

Gear oil (not engine oil) is a great chain lube. I read some time ago that MotoGP team uses gear oil to lube the chain on their race bikes. That's good enough for me. I use it all the time. And they are relatively cheap. Used engine oil is probably ok but as its viscosity would be very much lower especially used, expect the protection to be compromised. As an indication, my 530 O-ring chain survived for more than 100,000km on this oil. But regular care is crucial to get such mileage.

Hi guys, I managed to clean my S4 chain and spoket yesterday by using car jack.

I used some kerosene and brush to clean the chain and clear all the dirt & grease of the chain then wipe dry.

After which I used the OWS chain lube for the chain.

For once the chain look super clean and the gold chain can been seen clearly .

it sure will fling. been there done that.

Im pretty sure it will fling bro bt as long it didnt fling tat bad, i wanna giv it a try :)

I gues tis are the newer Motul gear oil as the "gear oil" whre stated on the bottle. I also had done some research regarding tis issue (gear oil were use as chain lube) .. Will try it on my next servicing. Anw, how often do u oil ur chain?

Great idea bro, i will try using kerosene & brush b4 putting tis gear oil..

Btw how much a bottle of OWS chain lube cost?

if you don't want fling, go for the bel ray white sperm lube. it does not fling, is the thicker type but its white in colour so you might not like it.

I've seen bikes using engine/gear oil as lube and yeah, it gets on their rim pretty fast. the bel ray doesnt have such problem for me except a fine coat of white dust after 1st ride, after that, nothing.

Hi ts, definitely will fling with both engine oil and gear oil but if you make lubing a habit, your chains will last longer and cleaner as compared to any other stick on chain lube. Its either this or that. cheers.

Hi JB

How often do I lube my chain? No specific mileage. I look at the chain roller, and if it starts to get a little shiny -meaning the lube has gone- I lube them. In dry weather a lubed chain will last maybe 3-400km. Also, after every raining ride or wash, I check for that shine.

Lube between the chain plates, not just the rollers.

For cleaning, use kerosene in a wash-pan and a brush. thereafter, dry off with a rag, then lube it.

No need for expensive aerosol lube - you pay for a lot of air and binding agent that does not lube the chain. The active ingredient in all these is still Gear oil.

I use Castrol gear oil. Cost ard $10 per liter and last for years.

hey thanks guys fer all the great info & tips.. Anw, i already tried using the leftover gear oil on my chain. It do flings bt wasnt as bad as i tot.. Bt the saddest part is my chrome rim, oil splashed.. So i gotta wipe it aftr long day ride, evritime.. Myb im trying the OWS chain lube next.. :)

don't be bluff by the big number like 80W90 for gear oil. it pretty much the same viscosity as 20W50 Engine oil:)

personally, i think EO / GO is ok for small bike. if riding someone bigger, get a proper lubrication will be a better bet.
