I would like to ask whether Honda CBR 400 is a good choice for a first bike?

The thing is, my parents disallow me to take a 2B bike. The reason was not nice, not stable bla bla bla.

So what do you think?

CBR 400... production stopped around late 90s, I rode an 'R' model (registered 1996) till Sept last year whereby I traded it in for an R1... Had her for a good 3 years plus, here's my take..

For pure riding experience, it is a hell of a lot of fun. Enough power to leave most bikes in the dust at the stoplights. Very good cornering ability and smooth and stable at high speeds. Low seat height means you can put both feet flat on the road when you stop, even for under 1.65m tall shorties. Most of the bikes would already have been modded to death by previous owners, so you may get lucky and strike one with aftermarket pipes from Scorpion, Yoshimura, GPR, Micron, Akra...etc.

For the cons, well, since its an old bike, for sure the maintenance might be a killer, like I said, most bikes would have been passed around by many different owners, I was the 8th owner of my old cbr4, so you may encounter bikes with radiator/coolant problems, electrical/wiring issues, or that old chestnut, the spoilt magnetic coil/ starter relay/ ignition problem. Still, this may not be such a problem if the bike has been cared for by its previous owners, so you should thoroughly check the bike if you intend to get one, preferably with someone who has previous 1st hand knowledge about the cbr400. Why not have a look around the 'babyblade' thread under the Sportbikes section?

Good luck and ride safe!

I used to be a car person. Then one day, I woke up and became a biker.

Ex rides:

Nissan Sunny 1.6

Nissan Cefiro 2.0

Honda CBR 150 R

Honda CBR 400 RR Fireblade

Current rides:

Yamaha 2008 YZF-R1

KIA Cerato Forte 1.6 Well OK sometimes a car comes in handy.

If you can afford it, go for the NSR250 or RS250. Experience the power of a 250 2T before they're gone.

imo is that it will have many problems as it is an old bike. its like big bro of typical problematic sp/krr lol

The big brother of the SP is the NSR250. The NSR will wipe the floor with the CBR.

My personal view on honda engine is terrific, superior quality but again owner part in maintaining it is important. If you intend to get one, prepare some money in hand just in case some repairs needed.

Here's some history of CBR400RR (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_CBR400RR)

bike is a machine without soul, rider would inject new life and character to this machine

Hey dude i have the same situation as you. No 2b bike cos parents dont allow. i am also looking at CBR400 cos its machine price is so cheap. Just want to ask you guys, are the problems you all mentioned above a constant problem or is it a one off. like fixed already wont come back that kind or must every few months fix the same problem?
