Hi, I need some help with the HOH steering technique, when going right round a bend, i follow the book but something seemed to be wrong and I failed the prac.. and I can't really remember how the instructor tells me what to do.

I try to list the 6 steps as taught in the book..

1. Both hands hold steering on the outer ring.

2. Push steering wheel with left hand to the right, while releasing grip of the right hand.

3. Cross right hand over the left grabbing hold of the outer ring.

4.Right hand pulls steering wheel to the right, while left hand releases its grip.

5. Left hand grabs outer ring on the left and pushes steering wheel to the right, while right hand releases its grip.

6. To return steering wheel to the straight position or turn left, the procedure is reverse.

My questions are 1. do I really need to make so much turning going around a bend, will I be over steering?

And what does the last step mean? (6) When I am existing the bend and need to straighten my steering wheel again, do I just simply push the wheel back to the left, or I need to do HOH(Towards the left) AGAIN??

Thanks for any advises.

Think of it like pulling a pulley. If you have already attended the practical, you will realise the steering ratio needs you to turn almost 1 full round for a 90 degrees bend.

Returning the steering wheel to centre is hand-over-hand as well. A way for begineers to gauge how much they have turned is to put your hands on the 3 and 9 o'clock positions with the thumb straight on the steering wheel .

When you turn left, release your left hand and use your right hand to turn the wheel. When the right hand reaches the 10 o'clock position or so then grab the wheel at 4 o'clock with your left hand. Release your right hand and pull your left hand back to 9 o'clock and right hand holds the wheel again at 3 o'clock. That would be one full round and vice versa.

Man.. I had to simulate myself driving to type that out. Sooner or later it will become 2nd nature to you with more driving. Of couse when you have a few years under your belt driving your own car, you might be doing a one-palm-on-steering-wheel turning.

Learning to drive in the arcades isn't exactly accurate because the steering wheel can only go through a max of 270 degrees for most arcade machines.

ok thanks. but lastly, all these HOH may NOT 100% be turning the wheel one FULL around right, no matter for turning or straightening back, that depends on the sharpness of the turn right?

If you are not going through a filter lane or doing a 90 degrees turn or a U-turn, there's hardly a need to do hand-over-hand. For normal gradual/gentle bends, all you need is shuffle the steering wheel.

@ first i also thought so.. but I learning @ bbdc. those in subject 1.04 should know what I am saying, out of 4 bends, we are required to HOH for 3 bends, which i also feel dun really need. But back to my question, HOH is not really 100% one full round for bend right..?

u learning @ bbdc too? i just cleared 5.01. Can tell u once u move beyond stage 1, most instructors wun care how u turn ur wheel... i use a combi of HOH and just plain 1 hand-pushing.. of cos when u do the "wrong" techniques, make sure u can still retain control of your car lor. A lot of the instructors dun practise wat they preach anyway..

Depending on different car models, most cars can turn about 2 1/2 turn in each direction. Full lock would mean turning it to the max while full turn is basically just 1 turn.
