Hello riders & riders-to-be, I'm pretty sure most people before buying a bike, will look for reliability, availability of spare parts, fuel consumption (http://www.singaporebikes.com/forums/showthread.php/102319-Discussion-Various-Fuel-Consumption-on-various-bikes?highlight=discussion+fuel+consumption) and the cost of general maintenance.

To start this thread off, I would like to say that general maintenance includes changing of spark plugs, engine oil, oil filters, valve clearance, etc. Other stuff like charging of battery, tyre wear & tear, overhaul of engine are problems that will only occur in a very long run, hence its not part of general maintenance.

Dear riders, please state your bike, distance travelled before every maintenance, and price!

I'll get the thread going. (copy & paste to carry on)

for the kr? you change engine/gearbox oil every 3.5k km? or is it 2t? :)

Engine oil. 2T is like every 200km+/- then I'll top up. Price varies on the type of 2T you'll be using. can be $8 to $28.

my 2 stroke's manual recommends 12000 km change which amounts to 6months or smth. though some of my friends do tell me tt 3 months can change but prolly 4 stroke and 2 stroke is different. anw good initative on creating the thread!

Getting about on a scoot now. Suzuki an125.

Low maintenance IMHO.

Gets between 36-40km/l regularly, takes 700ml engine oil (prorate cost $10 fully syn) every 4k, oil filter ($4) change at 8k km, transmission oil change (prorate cost $2) of 150ml, belt change ($20) and rollers ($15) at 24k, iridium spark plug ($15) every 24k, battery ($40) assume need to change every three years.

Prices are parts only. With exception of belt and rollers, the rest can DIY if you wish.

Based on my riding usage, I probably clock about 8k per year only. Thus prorate yearly parts only maintenance cost is about ~ $56.

For a more comprehensive estimate, assuming labour is double of parts, running cost per year is about $112.

To take this a bit further, tires cost a mere $100 per pair including installations (Michelin). Expect to change it out every 5 years so adds about prorated $20 per year. Based on $1.80 after discount for Ron 95 and my usage per year. My fuel cost is about $400 yearly. Insurance for 3PFT is $220 yearly. Road tax is $64, season parking + misc parking + ERP is $240

Absolute running cost ~ $1,056......The amount of stuff you can do while waiting for someone......

HAHAHHAHAHHAH. NOW . IF i take mrt everyday to and fro approximately $3 per day for 6 days a week = 18. 18 x4 = $ 72 per month 72 x 12 = approximately $ 864 a year. now my bike runs 50km per day and uses only 2litre per day. in 6 days 12 litres and its about $80 per month.

now mrt / bus every morning i have to squeeze with many people. seat?? no way. from bukit batok to tanjong pagar.but i dont have to worry about tyres, petrol , road tax, insurance, headlight, inspection, brake pad , speed limit etc etc etc.

motor every morning - use expressway pay and pay. and still jam. must think of many things concerning bike. hmmmmmm

Would one rather pay the cost of owning and maintaining a motorcycle and feel the freedom on the road, or save some cold hard cash and have to withstand accumulation of more time commuting and not to forget the crowd and the risk of transport delays and breakdowns!

I would choose to still ride a motorcycle any day :)

I feel happier on a bike.

Same, I rather be riding than being in the bus or MRT.
